This imaging is a fairly recent advancement in the dental technology field that empowers dentists to view teeth in three dimensions including the soft tissues and bones that surround them.

An X-ray beam is used in the shape of a cone rather than the traditional fan shape. This unique beam takes upwards of 600 images of the mouth so software can use the information to present the mouth in three dimensions. These three-dimensional images are much more informative than conventional two-dimensional X-rays as the dentist can move the images to view bone structures and teeth at several different angles. 

As an example, cone beam 3D imaging is used to view the proximity of wisdom teeth to the nerves within the jaw. In other instances, this technology is used to view the amount of bone available in the context of placing a dental implant. 3D cone beam imaging is also used for oral reconstruction purposes, TMJ diagnostics, bone structure evaluation, the orientation of teeth, and plenty more.
